Skip the SIM-shop queue and the KYC paperwork. An eSIM lets you arrive in India with mobile data already active — no physical card, no cash exchange desk. Here's what to buy and how to set it up.

eSIM works on iPhone XS and newer (except iPhone SE 1st gen), Samsung Galaxy S20+, Google Pixel 3+, and many other 2019+ Android flagships. Check your phone settings: Settings → Cellular (iOS) or Network → SIM → Add eSIM.
Purchase from Airalo or Holafly, then install the profile. The eSIM is ready but stays dormant — it only activates when you land and your phone connects to an Indian network.
After purchase you'll receive a QR code by email. On iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add Plan → scan QR. On Android the path varies by manufacturer. Do this step on WiFi — not on the eSIM itself.
Most travellers keep their home SIM active for calls and use the India eSIM for data. Under Cellular (iOS) or Network settings, set the India eSIM as your default data line.
To avoid unexpected roaming charges, disable data roaming on your home SIM before you land. The India eSIM handles all data.
For most visitors an eSIM is the easier route — no queue at the airport counter, no paperwork, and it can be activated before you land. But India requires foreign tourists buying a local SIM (physical or eSIM issued by an Indian carrier) to complete KYC verification with passport, visa copy, a passport photo, and proof of a local address (usually your first hotel booking). Airalo and Holafly eSIMs are issued by the provider directly and skip that in-country KYC process entirely, which is why they are the simplest option for short trips.
Jio has the widest 4G/5G footprint nationwide, including many rural and remote areas, and is generally considered to have the fastest average speeds. Airtel is a close second with excellent coverage in cities and most tourist circuits, plus a strong reputation for reliability. Vi (Vodafone Idea) covers major cities well but has patchier rural coverage. Airalo and Holafly eSIMs typically roam on Airtel or Vi networks. In remote Himalayan regions (Ladakh, parts of Himachal Pradesh) coverage from any carrier can be limited.
Most India eSIM plans from Airalo or Holafly are data-only. For voice calls you need a locally registered SIM (which requires the KYC process above) or you can use a VoIP app (WhatsApp, FaceTime) over the eSIM data connection.
Light use (maps, messaging, some social media): 3–5 GB. Moderate (daily navigation, video calls, streaming): 8–15 GB. Heavy (constant video streaming, hotspot for a laptop): 20 GB+. A 10 GB 30-day plan covers most two-week trips, including the Golden Triangle (Delhi–Agra–Jaipur) and a beach or hill-station extension.
Yes — Airalo allows in-app top-ups without reinstalling the eSIM profile. Holafly generally requires buying a new plan, which reapplies to the same eSIM. Either way you do not need to remove and reinstall the profile.
A physical SIM from Jio or Airtel is worth the hassle if you need a local phone number for OTP verification (common for ride-hailing apps, payment apps, or hotel bookings), if you are staying long-term, or if your phone does not support eSIM. Expect to show your passport, visa, and a hotel booking confirmation at the shop, and allow it a few hours to a day to activate.
